Weaving
Community
Tejiendo Comunidad
Giving a community celebration a shared visual language.

About the initiative
Northfield Public Library's Hispanic Heritage Month celebration brought together performances, music, activities and community events.
The library had a creative direction centered around weaving, tradition, connection and color. The project developed a name and shared visual language that could bring those pieces together across the celebration.
My role
I led the research, naming, creative concept development, visual identity and bilingual hierarchy, and designed the core campaign materials and visual foundation.
The library team then used that foundation to create additional social media and event communications.
It started with...
An idea looking for a name.
Northfield Public Library had a direction for its 2026 Hispanic Heritage Month celebration: weaving, tradition, connection and color.
The idea was there.
It still needed a name and a visual language that could bring those pieces together.
What exactly were we weaving together?
Hispanic Heritage Month represents people from many countries, cultures and traditions.
They share a celebration, but they don't share one identity.
That became the starting point for the design.
The name became
Weaving Community
Tejiendo Comunidad
Every thread keeps its identity.
Together, they create something stronger.
The threads gave us a simple way to represent that idea. Each one could remain different while still becoming part of something shared.
This became the visual principle behind the identity.
- Different stories.
- Different cultures.
- Different traditions.
- Different generations.

What I did
I turned the theme into a visual system the library could continue using.
Understood
the celebration
Understood what Hispanic Heritage Month represents beyond a single visual stereotype and explored how the library's creative direction could represent many identities.
Named
the idea
Turned the library's direction around weaving, tradition, connection and color into: Weaving Community / Tejiendo Comunidad.
Translated
the concept into a visual language
Translated the concept into threads, color, bilingual hierarchy and a recognizable identity.
Built
a system others could use
Designed the core materials and visual foundation that the library team could extend across additional communications.
- Research
- Creative direction
- Visual identity
- Bilingual communication
- Identity system
The system in the world
The identity didn't stay in the original designs.
The team extended it.
My original designs established the visual foundation.
The Northfield Public Library team then used that system to create additional event and social communications.
The examples shown here are evidence that the system was strong enough for other people to use.

One idea.
Many expressions.
The library team extended the visual language across event communications, and Weaving Community became the name and identity used to introduce and frame the celebration itself.

One visual language
A shared identity connected different parts of the celebration.
Extended by the team
The library team used the visual foundation to create additional communications.
EN + ES
Bilingual communication was designed as part of the identity rather than added afterward.
One central idea
Different identities. One celebration.
From identity to experience
The visual language moved from campaign materials into the celebration itself.
At the celebration

The project stopped asking people
to come to a celebration.
It started showing them
what that celebration meant.
Public project materials
Weaving Community gave the celebration a shared language. Sellos de Herencia, the next project, gave people a way to experience and explore it.
